Her mother died when she was 4 years old and her father has put it in her head that Lily killed her mother. Clues from the book suggest that Lily's mother was packing that day to leave when T.Ray came up the stairs and was yelling and shaking her mother, she then picked up a gun and t. ray threw it on the ground. All Lily remembers after that was picking the gun up and the gun shooting. since her mother had died T.Ray has punished Lily by making her kneel on all fours on grits and work on the peach farm selling peaches. T.ray hates that Lily reads, which she does a lot, because he thinks it gives her ideas of going to college which he thinks is a waste of money. One day Lily finds a few of her mothers things and hides them in the field. On occasion Lily would go out to the field to look at them to try and remember her mother. One night she goes to the field and gets out her mothers possessions she ends up falling asleep in the field with her shirt unbuttoned and T. Ray finds her. T.Ray assumes that Lily was out in the field with a boy and makes her kneel on the grits for an hour. The next day Rosaleen says she is going into town to register to vote and Lily decides to go with her. they walk all the way into town and decide to stop in a church to rest. while they were in the church Rosaleen steals two fans and then leaves. When Rosaleen and Lily are walking through the town some racist white men start to make fun of Rosaleen for being black and Rosaleen pours her spit jug on the men's shoes. So the men lunged at her and attacked her. After they were satisfied that she was hurt they called the police and Rosaleen and Lily were taken to jail.
